Highmeadow Woods
Highmeadow Woods is part of a 1075-hectare mixed woodland area in the Wye Valley, west of the Forest of Dean, spanning the border between Gloucestershire, Monmouthshire, and Herefordshire. The woodland lies entirely within the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and includes ecologically significant sites (SSSI, SAC, National Nature Reserve). The area has rich 18th-19th century industrial history related to iron ore trade and charcoal production, with dramatic craggy scenery and panoramic views.

Best for
Demanding walking with scenic views, river crossing, and historical landmarks including King Arthur's Cave and Seven Sister Rocks. The Highmeadow trail is an 11-mile circular walk (variants available at 13 miles and 9 miles) featuring steep hills and river views.
Wildlife
The woodland supports diverse wildlife habitats within SSSI and SAC designations. Peregrine Falcons nest on Coldwell Rocks near Symonds Yat Hill Fort, an Iron Age settlement.
History
Rich 18th-19th century industrial history with a weir and dock constructed on the River Wye at Symonds Yat to support iron ore trade powered by coppiced wood for charcoal production. Remnants of these industries remain visible. Symonds Yat Hill Fort is an Iron Age settlement managed with English Heritage.
